“Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do when they come for you?” It may be the catchy tune that goes along with a b-list crime show on TV, but when the bad guys go running in Durham Region, on the east side of Toronto, Air1 is going to be on their tail!
In the wee hours of January 27, a female caller informed 911 that a guy that she knew was chasing her in north Oshawa, trying to run her off the road. Lucky for her, Durham Regional Police Services Air1 is stationed within seconds of her location.
Within minutes, the chase was on and Air 1 had eyes on the late model Chevrolet Camaro as it headed east along highway 401, at speeds reported as high as 237 km/h.
What ensued was believed to be the second longest helicopter chase ever in Ontario and the entire event was caught on night vision camera from the Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter.
The driver headed north from the 401 towards Peterborough before turning back towards Oshawa on Ganaraska Road. Using instructions from above, officers on the ground deployed spike strips to disable the vehicle.
Once the Camaro had flat tires, the Air1 footage shows the driver fleeing on foot. As he crosses a field, he can be seen to drop something, which he goes back to pick up. Then, as police on foot are getting closer, he leaves the package behind.
Surrounded by police and on night vision camera, the 47 year old perp is apprehended and subsequently charged with a bevy of drug related infractions along with the obvious speed related crimes.
It just goes to show you that no matter how fast your car is, you just can’t escape the police.
